United States Transfers Third High-Endurance Cutter (WHEC) to Vietnam Coast Guard as Nations Celebrate 30 Years of Diplomatic Relations

NINH HOA, VIETNAM, 18/06/2025 – As the United States and Vietnam celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the U.S. Mission to Vietnam is proud to announce the successful transfer of the high-endurance cutter CSB 8022 to the Vietnam Coast Guard (VCG), marking another significant milestone in defense and security cooperation between the two nations.
The vessel, formerly known as the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mellon, traveled from Seattle, Washington, with port calls in Hawaii and Guam before arriving in Vietnam.
Chargé d’Affaires Courtney Beale and Major General Ngo Binh Minh, Commander of VCG Region 3 welcomed CSB 8022 in Ninh Hoa, marking the cutter’s official arrival to Vietnam.
“Today’s delivery reflects the continued growth of security cooperation over the past 30 years of diplomatic relations,” said Chargé d’Affaires Beale. “The United States and Vietnam respect each other’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political system, and remain firmly committed to supporting our shared vision of peace and stability, and of prosperity and security in the Indo-Pacific,” she reaffirmed.
This is the third WHEC provided under the U.S.-Vietnam Bilateral Defense Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding, following the delivery of CSB 8020 (ex-USCGC Morgenthau) in 2017 and CSB 8021 (ex-USCGC John Midgett) in 2020.
Through this cooperation, the United States and Vietnam is enhancing the development of maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, and humanitarian and disaster relief abilities, and supporting capacity to protect sovereignty, while contributing to regional peace, security, and stability.

Hoa Kỳ chuyển giao tàu tuần tra thứ ba cho Cảnh sát Biển Việt Nam nhân kỉ niệm 30 năm quan hệ ngoại giao

Nhân dịp kỉ niệm 30 năm quan hệ ngoại giao Hoa Kỳ – Việt Nam, Phái đoàn Hoa Kỳ tại Việt Nam tự hào thông báo về việc chuyển giao thành công tàu tuần tra CSB 8022 cho Cảnh sát biển Việt Nam, đánh dấu một cột mốc quan trọng nữa trong hợp tác quốc phòng và an ninh giữa hai quốc gia.
Chiếc tàu được chuyển giao, từng được biết đến với tên gọi Tàu tuần tra Mellon của Tuần duyên Hoa Kỳ, đã bắt đầu hành trình từ Seattle (bang Washington), với các điểm dừng tại Hawaii và Guam trước khi đến Việt Nam.
Đại biện lâm thời Courtney Beale và Thiếu tướng Ngô Bình Minh, Tư lệnh Vùng Cảnh sát biển 3 Việt Nam đã chào đón tàu CSB 8022 tại Ninh Hòa, đánh dấu sự kiện chiếc tàu chính thức tới Việt Nam.
“Việc chuyển giao tàu ngày hôm nay phản ánh sự phát triển không ngừng trong hợp tác an ninh giữa hai nước suốt 30 năm quan hệ ngoại giao,” Đại biện lâm thời Beale cho biết. “Hoa Kỳ và Việt Nam tôn trọng chủ quyền, toàn vẹn lãnh thổ và thể chế chính trị của nhau, và cam kết vững chắc hỗ trợ tầm nhìn chung về hòa bình và ổn định, cũng như thịnh vượng và an ninh ở khu vực Ấn Độ Dương – Thái Bình Dương,” bà tái khẳng định.
Đây là tàu tuần tra thứ ba được chuyển giao trong khuôn khổ Bản ghi nhớ về hợp tác quốc phòng Hoa Kỳ – Việt Nam, sau các tàu CSB 8020 (trước đây là USCGC Morgenthau) vào năm 2017, và CSB 8021 (trước đây là USCGC John Midgett) vào năm 2020.
Thông qua sự hợp tác này, Hoa Kỳ và Việt Nam đang tăng cường phát triển khả năng thực thi pháp luật trên biển, tìm kiếm cứu nạn, cứu trợ nhân đạo và thảm họa, đồng thời hỗ trợ năng lực bảo vệ chủ quyền, góp phần vào hòa bình, an ninh và ổn định khu vực.
