VVMF COMMEMORATES 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE WALL IN 2017 2/17/2017 11:48 AM When the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (The Wall) was dedicated in Washington, D.C. in 1982, a promise was made to never forget those who sacrificed their lives during the Vietnam War. More than 58,000 names are inscribed on The Wall and 35 years after its dedication, it has become a sacred place of homage for loved ones and visitors to pay their respects. Every day, Vietnam veterans start or continue their healing process and younger generations continue to be awed by the scope of individual sacrifice. This memorial, which began in controversy, changed the way a nation mourned. The number of items left at The Wall in remembrance is now more than 400,000. VVMF knows that The Wall will continue to impact our country for generations to come. It is important that we keep the promise to never forget – never forget the names, never forget the faces, and never forget the stories behind the brave individuals who gave all for their country. There is no better time to educate current and future generations about the Vietnam War’s impact and legacy. 2017 is going to be a monumental year for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. From the anniversary of The Wall’s groundbreaking in March to the anniversary of the dedication in November, we have a year of commemorative events ahead.
