Also, several new exhibits in the Vietnam Room and in other museum areas will be noted during tours. Vietnam veterans were disrespected by some in the U.S. when they returned home from war. A gradual change in attitude came when the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was erected in Washington, D.C., in 1982, according to Ask.com. The political situation began in Southeast Asia when communists established a foothold in Vietnam after World War II. When the Japanese retreated following World War II, the citizens established its own government. The war was between South Vietnam and North Vietnam. The North was supported by China, North Korea and the Soviet Union. The South was supported by the United States, Australia, Thailand, the Philippines and New Zealand. The Viet Cong, or National Liberation Front, were communist forces who employed guerrilla warfare against the anti-communist forces in the South. The North Vietnamese army was known as the People’s Army of Vietnam. The war was not popular in the United States. U.S. forces withdrew in 1973, and two years later, Vietnam was united under communist rule. Of the 3 million lives lost during the conflict; 58,000 were Americans. The museum is at 701 Kansas Lane. It is operated through the Friends of Chennault Museum and the Louisiana Secretary of State’s office. It is open Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. There is no admission fee.
