Vietnam – PISA 2015 brief (English)Vietnam ranks among the top 10 countries participating in program for international student assessment (PISA) this year. Vietnam’s performance continues to be significantly above average for its income group and above many high-income countries. For reading, the share of children below basic proficiency has increased since 2012, and the share of highly proficient performers has decreased slightly. The same pattern also applies for Maths, but these differences are not significant. The difference between urban and rural students in Science is equivalent to 1.3 years of schooling. Girls perform better than boys in Science, but the difference is not significant. Students with early childhood development (ECD) experience perform 0.7 years ahead of those with no ECD. Coordinated revision of the national curriculum for grades 1-12 will allow greater emphasis to be placed on the application of knowledge. Gaps and potential weaknesses in the in-service training system for teachers require mitigation as Vietnam seeks to implement more ambitious learning goals. Promoting higher quality in tertiary education – including through increased private provision will permit the tremendous potential of the country’s 15-year olds to be realized as highly-skilled and capable tertiary graduates.
