Number of Confirmed COVID-19 Cases Increase Periodically as Vietnamese Repatriation Flights Continue for Vietnamese Nationals

Event: The U.S. Embassy Hanoi and Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City are providing U.S. citizens with information during the evolving Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation in Vietnam.
As of May 15, Vietnam has reported 312 confirmed cases of COVID-19 within its borders since the virus first became known. To date, 260 people have recovered and have been released from the hospital.
Update:
Although Vietnam has not reported any recent cases of community transmission for COVID-19, U.S. citizens are informed that the number of confirmed cases may continue to increase periodically as Government of Vietnam repatriation flights continue for Vietnamese nationals. All recent COVID-19 cases have been people arriving from outside the country and have been quarantined on arrival. Vietnam continues to relax social distancing guidelines. U.S. citizens should continue to follow the health guidelines of Vietnamese authorities, including wearing masks in public, and remain vigilant of official reports and updates on COVID-19. Even as Vietnam continues to relax social distancing guidelines, the global COVID-19 situation continues to affect U.S. Embassy Hanoi and Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City consular operations and services. The American Citizen Services (ACS) units in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are only accepting emergency appointments. A timeline for a return to normal services and operations is currently unavailable. Individuals who have qualifying reasons for an emergency appointment can submit their request for American Citizen Services here. In deciding whether to contact U.S. Embassy Hanoi or Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City, U.S. citizens are asked to consider their physical location. U.S. Embassy Hanoi covers areas north of Hue, including Sapa, Ha Long Bay, and Hai Phong. The U.S. Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City covers areas south of and including Hue, such as Danang, Nha Trang, and Can Tho.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Vietnam enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), or update their profile with the most current information. STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
